Aedes albopictus

Small to medium black and white mosquito with five white basal bands on hind tarsi, white tipped palps, and a white stripe of scales on scutum.

Aedes atlanticus

Medium sized mosquito with dark brown and bright white coloration. Scutum has a broad silvery white stripe of scales down the center and basal lateral patches of white scales on the abdomen.

Aedes canadensis

Medium sized mosquito with a light brown scutum and dark legs with white cross banding on all tarsal segments

Aedes japonicus

Medium sized mosquito that is mostly black and white including a dark abdomen with white lateral patches. Dark legs with three white basal bands on hind tarsi. Scutum is dark with golden lyre-shaped stripes. 

Aedes sollicitans

Medium to large mosquito with black, gold and white scales. Proboscis is dark with a large white band. Scutum is golden dorsally with lateral bright white scales. Legs are speckled in pale and dark scales with white basal banding on forelegs. Abdomen is dark with light basal banding and a mid dorsal stripe.

Aedes sticticus

Medium mosquito with mostly dark and white coloration. Scutum is covered in cream colored scales with a dark patch through the center. Abdomen is dark brown with white basal bands

Aedes taeniorhynchus

Small to medium dark mosquito covered in patches of white scales and a brown scutum. Abdomen is dark with narrow white basal bands. Forelegs have white basal bands. Palps are short and white tipped, proboscis has a single narrow white band. 

Aedes triseriatus

Medium sized mosquitoes with black and silvery white coloration. Thorax is covered in broad silvery white scales. Scutum is white laterally with a pear shaped broad black stripe through the center. No leg banding. Abdomen is mostly black with silvery white basal lateral patches

Aedes trivittatus

Medium sized black and white mosquito. Scutum has characteristic alternating black and white stripes while the rest of the body is mostly dark. Abdomen has angular lateral patches of white basal bands

Aedes vexans

Dark brown and white medium sized mosquito characterized by double-rounded basal abdominal banding 

Anopheles crucians

Long palps with thin pale banding, spotted pattern on wings due to pale colored scales interspersed with dark scales. Medium to large mosquito

Anopheles punctipennis

Long dark palps and wings with an anterior pale spot and two dark spots on vein 1A. Medium to large mosquito

Anopheles quadrimaculatus

Long dark palps and wings with four distinct dark patches of scales. Medium to large mosquito

Coquillettidia perturbans

Medium to large mosquito with broad dark and light brown scales speckled all over wings and body. Legs with bright white/pale bands

Culex erraticus

Small dark brown mosquito with patches of white scales along scutum. Abdomen is mostly dark with thin basal white banding

Culex restuans

Small to medium brown mosquito with a light scutum and dark legs and abdomen. Pale or white basal banding on abdomen with more pronounced lateral patches. Broad white bands on base of each abdominal segment. Two small pale dots on scutum. (Image Coming Soon)

Culex pipiens

Small to medium brown mosquito with a light scutum and dark legs and abdomen. Pale or white basal banding on abdomen with more pronounced lateral patches.  Two small pale dots absent from the  scutum. (Image Coming Soon)

Culex salinarius

Small light brown mosquito with pale or bronze speckled scales on scutum and abdomen. Mesopimeron with bright patch of pale scales.

Culex territans

Small mosquito with dark body and light scutum. Top of abdomen is mostly dark with pale apical patches laterally while underside is covered completely in white scales.

Culiseta melanura

Medium sized dark "chocolate" brown mosquito often lacking any distinct markings. Proboscis is particularly long with a downward curve.

Orthopodomyia signifera

Medium to large black and white mosquito with speckled scales on legs, wings and proboscis. Hind tarsi have five white crossbanded segments and scutum has a unique pattern of vertical white stripes

Psorophora ciliata

Largest biting mosquito with a highly decorated body that is slightly yellow with patches of gold, white and black scales. Between segments, legs are covered in dark tufted scales. Scutum has two white patches on either side and a gold stripe down the center. 

Psorophora columbiae

Medium black and white speckled mosquito. Hind tarsi with white basal bands as well as a single band on each femur. Abdomen has lateral patches that extend towards the center creating a "T" shape.

Psorophora ferox

Medium to large purple and gold colored mosquito. Scutum is speckled with gold scales dorsally and white scales laterally. Hind tarsi with characteristic white scales like socks.

Psorophora howardii

Large and dark colored mosquito with palps reaching mid proboscis and dark tufted scales on femur and tibia. Scutum has a central dark brown or black stripe

Toxorhynchites rutilus

Largest species in North America with a very colorful and ornamented body in blue, green, purple and gold scales. Proboscis is long and pointed downward

Uranotaenia sapphirina

Very small light brown mosquito with iridescent blue patches of scales on head, thorax and wings. Palps are short and proboscis has a bulbous tip
