Public Resources

This is a dedicated resource page meant to be helpful to any citizen of or visitor to the state of Virginia looking for mosquito-related information.

Below is information about what you can do to protect yourself and your family, links to local mosquito control programs, and links to state and national agencies.

Some local jurisdictions offer services such as yard inspections, mosquito treatments, and mosquitofish deliveries. Call or email your jurisdiction to find out what more they have to offer!

How to protect yourself from mosquitoes

Avoid going outdoors during peak mosquito activity

Particularly during dawn and dusk, but also during the day in shaded areas where mosquitoes are harboring away from the sun.

Protect yourself against mosquito bites

If you will be outdoors, wear long-sleeved, loose, light-colored clothing and apply an insect repellent (according to the label instructions) to any exposed skin.

Look for the following active ingredients:

  • DEET
  • Picaridin
  • IR3535
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE)
  • Para-menthane-diol (PMD)
  • 2-undecanone

Mosquito-proof your home

Keep screens on windows and doors in good repair.

Utilize air conditioning when available.

Eliminate or dump at least weekly any standing water, which may include:

  • Kids' toys, pet bowls, buckets, corrugated drain pipes
  • Disposing of old tires
  • Cleaning out clogged rain gutters
  • Emptying flower pots and bird baths
  • Draining pool covers and tarps
  • Keeping fence posts covered

Treat* with larvicide (according to label instructions) any water that you cannot dump regularly, such as:

  • Ornamental ponds
  • Low lying areas on your property that hold water

*Many areas supply mosquito dunks for free to residents (e.g. Suffolk and York) or you can purchase them at your local hardware/home improvement store as well as online retailers.

Vaccinate and treat your animals

Consult with your veterinarian to make sure all of your animals are protected. Available preventative measures include:

  • Horses: vaccines for West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis virus
  • Dogs, cats, and ferrets: heartworm preventative medicine
