Job Announcement

The Delaware Mosquito Control Section has a job opening for a mid-level Mosquito Control biologist (with possible career-ladder advancement to an upper-level biologist) as described in the e-link below.  The position is a very good one for anybody seeking a frontline, operations-oriented career in mosquito control (along with tackling some field and lab research); and in our case involves working for a state-level, statewide program somewhat uniquely housed within a state fish-and-wildlife management agency.

Virginia is Holding 2 Free AMCA “Train the Trainer” Workshops this Fall

Hello VMCA members,

Would you like to be certified as a trainer by AMCA (American Mosquito Control Association) and CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)?  Are you interested in learning about AMCA’s updated “Best Practices for Integrated Mosquito Management?”

This fall, Virginia will be hosting two free “Train the Trainer” workshops emphasizing AMCA’s 2017 Best Practices for Integrated Mosquito Management: A Focused Update.  These workshops will focus on Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, container-inhabiting vectors of several human diseases. After the attendance of a workshop and the completion of the associated online e-modules, you can receive AMCA certification to train others.

For your convenience, workshops will be held in Northern Virginia and in Southeastern Virginia.  Each workshop will each be a two-day course taught by AMCA master trainers.

The VMCA is holding a 2 day FREE adult mosquito ID course on May 8th and 9th.  It will be conducted by the combined efforts of local mosquito control biologists.  This is not taxonomy or a refresher course but a more practical training geared toward seasonal interns, summer part-time biology positions or mosquito biologists new to the area.  Class size is limited to 25 so please make every effort to send eligible participants. Sign-up is on a first come first serve basis. New participants have preference over returning individuals; if space is available then others will be accepted.  Please sign up early.

Supplies and microscopes are limited but we will have a few extras on hand. If possible, please bring the following items:  microscope with lamp, power strip, extension cord, forceps, petri dishes, wipes, alcohol, notebook, and refillable coffee mug (optional).  The course will be held at Suffolk Mosquito Control Training Room, 800 Carolina Rd., Suffolk, Virginia 23434.  Supplies can be dropped off on Friday, May 5th and will be securely locked for the weekend.

A tentative schedule is attached and subject to change but starting times will remain the same.

Lunch is on your own but there are plenty of places to eat within a short drive. An on-site refrigerator and microwave is available.  We will provide coffee, donuts, fruit, sodas, and water for both days.
